The Education Centre was opened by Bishop John Brewer in 1987. The Centre serves as both an administrative base for the diocesan Education Service and as a venue for a range of courses.
How it operates
Before the Education Centre was opened, like most other Catholic dioceses in England and Wales , Lancaster maintained separate Schools Commission and Religious Education teams. However, since 1987 the diocese has developed a single Education Service which unites diocesan provision for schools, adult formation, and parish development.
The Education Service therefore functions as an integrated unit with responsibilities for all aspects of the diocesan educational mission in:
- 110 parishes
- 73 primary schools
- 12 secondary schools
- 1 sixth form college
